Sports Lore Bulletin

Just over forty years ago (June 8, 1966), the "merger" was announced. I remember hearing the news on our car radio (yes, they did have car radios then) and asking out loud "What are they going to call the merged league?"

Unfortunately, AFL owners chose not to heed fans' suggestions that it be called "Major League Football", and the name and logo of the AFL were abandoned.

I have made a few additions to the AFL site. See an original, complete AFL Standard Player Contract here. Also, TJ Troup has contributed an essay on AFL punt/kickoff returns, which may be seen at the bottom of the page here. And I've started a page commemorating the twenty players who were on AFL rosters for the entire ten year existence of the AFL here. I will add bios and photos to the latter page soon.

I have also started to place bios of every player ever on an AFL roster on the free, public-access encyclopedia Wikipedia. You might want to view or add to those names or their biographies. You can check them out at here.

For your information, I have received messages indicating that three AFL icons are very ill: Al Davis, Otis Taylor, and Johnny Robinson. This week, I am sending a detailed nomination to the hall of fame's Seniors Committee, for John Robinson. Let's hope they listen to reason.
