Derby Rider ran 5 unofficial races on a small track in Rosario, Argentina. He was unable to display his true potential since he had always competed with sore shins. Even though he was in pain he always fulfilled everyone's expectations. Later Derby Rider suffered a saucer stress fracture of the dorsal aspect (or cortex) in the middle third of the cannon bone. This injury compelled him to take a 6 month lay off. It was after this layoff that EquivestStable bought him.

EquiVest ran him on September 28,2003 in a 1200 meter race against 8 other horses. He won easily by 1-½ lengths. The 2nd place horse ran 6 lengths faster then the 3rd horse in an impressive time for this course of 1 minute and 12 seconds flat.

Derby Rider is sired by Ride the Rails who is the sire of Pacific Classic Winner Candy Ride. Derby Rider is considered a maiden since all of his races in Argentina are unofficial. Veteran horseman Bill Delia whose win record with EquiVest stable is at a very impressive 26% will be training him.

I believe that this horse has a lot of improving to do especially at longer distances. Derby Rider may very well be the best horse to represent Equivest Stable up to this point.

Derby Rider has passed his vet examination as of 2/7/04 and will jog at Sunny Farm for 30 days before being sent to trainer Bill Delia at Golden Gate Fields!!
