Chef Mike's Tailgate Talk

From Florida Travel USA

There's sports bars - and then there's the Pete Rose Ballpark Cafe. Described as a restaurant "in a league of its own," this innovative eatery can't go wrong with one of baseball's greatest legends at its helm.

If you're planning a stay on Florida's Atlantic coast, you'll have two locations to choose from - one in Boca Raton and the other in Boynton Beach. Specializing in "major league family fun," the restaurant is equipped with more than 50 televisions, a 65-game video arcade, billiards, wall-to-wall sports memorabilia and a gift shop featuring autographed Pete Rose merchandise.

Much of the food is familiar roadhouse fare with names that play on the baseball theme. Grand Slam Salads include Outfield Caesar Salad and Rookie of the Year Salad; Big League Burgers offer the Pete Rose Pattie Melt; and Stadium Sandwiches feature the Fenway Park Grinder (a hoagie-style sandwich), the Hot Designated Dipper (roast beef) and the Stadium Dog.

The menu also includes many tried-and-true entrees with a few innovative offerings thrown in for good measure. Double Play Fajitas and Ballpark Barbecued Ribs are guaranteed to satisfy large appetites, while Blackened Tuna Steak or Grilled Chicken & Penne are a little on the lighter side. Homemade desserts, including sundaes served in souvenir Reds' baseball caps, add the crowning touch to an appetizing meal. Younger guests can choose one of their favorites from the children's menu.

Happy Hour is celebrated daily at the Cafe from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday and nightly from 10 p.m. to close. Golfers who bring in their scorecards are treated to a complimentary drink.

Visitors are invited to join Pete Rose for his nationally syndicated radio show broadcast live from his sound booth within the Ballpark Cafe, also home to one of the largest collections of baseball honors and sports memorabilia ever assembled by a single athlete.

You'll find the Pete Rose Ballpark Cafe at 8144 W. Glades Rd., Boca Raton, just west of the Florida Turnpike and adjacent to the Holiday Inn West. The Boynton Beach location can be found at 1601 N. Congress Ave., adjacent to the Holiday Inn Catalina.

For more information, phone 561-488-PETE (in Boca Raton) or 561-364-PETE (in Boynton Beach).
