From
The American Striper Association's 2002 Mercury
Tournament Trail
Sean Clark, fishing on
his twenty foot SeaCraft Pacifier, grew up in
Old Saybrook and has been fishing the area since he
was 6 years old. His experience and knowledge paid off
as he, along with his two young sons, Sam and Charlie,
brought a 48.25 pound striper to the scales early on
the first day. That fish would hold the number one spot
for the rest of the tournament as Sean, Sam, and Charlie
won the first ASA event that they fished. It was exciting
to watch both Junior Anglers win their first ASA tournament
and bring three new faces into the ASA family.
Gary Corsetti on the Yamaha
powered 21 foot Contender Showtime, took second
place with a 47.51 pounder on day two. Gary, who loves
his Contender and runs Showtime Charters said, "There
was a lot of action in shallow water. The areas that
were holding lots of bait fish was where I found my
fish."
Captain Sherwood Lincoln
and former Major League Baseball player John Ellis
fished on their 21 foot Hydra Sport called the ShurBet.
This was their first ASA tournament and they are
planning to fish the last two tournaments in Division
Two next month in Montauk. Lincoln has fished the area
for many years, and his experiences showed as he took
third place with a 43.34 pound striper on day two.
John Ellis was born August
21, 1948 in New London, Connecticut. After playing American
Legion ball he played for the New York Yankees as a
catcher from 1969 to 1972. From 1973 to 1975 he was
with the Cleveland Indians. He became their first designated
hitter. He wrapped up his catching and hitting career
with the Texas Rangers from 1976 to 1981.
Perhaps he did not pose with the fish
because he did not have a big enough mitt?
That is not a ShurBet.
