Letters From The Grandstand

I have a question that maybe you or one of the readers can answer. I have a hat that has an emblem on it that says, Philadelphia Phillies, Established 1883. Can they legitimately make that claim. I know that at one time it was the Philadelphia Athletics but I'm not sure when they moved out west. Did the Phillies retain the franchise and Oakland start a new one?

Let me know or put it up on the site and see if anyone else would know. Also I have a friend who is a Cubs fan, (don't ask me why) but he is trying to get hold of two vintage baseball caps. One is the 1918 version with the guy leaning on the bat on the emblem and the other is like my Phillies hat that says established in? Any ideas where he might find them? He tried E-BAY already and hasn't had any luck there yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Mike..................Tom

P.S. The hats can be originals or reproductions, it doesn't matter to him.

Hi Tom,
This link should take you to the Fox Sports Store. It may be the hat your friend was looking for. I know it says 1914 but this was the style for many years, including 1918.

By the way it is a bear (like in Cubs) leaning on the bat, not a man. Though at times my wife sees the resemblance between me and a bear.

This link will take you to the Chicago Cubs Shop. If the picture shows the cap with "established" on it is the second from the bottom. You can click to enlarge it to make sure. I am pretty sure both are reproductions.

The Phillies did start in Philadelphia in 1883. They had a different name prior to that in New York City. Once arriving in Philadelphia they became the oldest same name sports franchise that stayed in the same city. This goes for any sport. The Philadelphia A's were a different team, and a competitor. At one time, a long time ago, their stadiums were near one another. Then the Phillies' stadium burnt down and they shared time in Connie Mack with the Philadelphia A's. However they were two different teams, and leagues. [Ed. note: From 1883-1889 they were officially known as the Philadelphia Quakers, but nicknamed the Philadelphias - eventually shortened to Phillies]

I hope this helps.
Mike
