Letters From The Grandstand
Dear Mike:

Well. Your Phillies won. Congratulations. I enjoyed the series and I enjoyed your pitcher Hamels. He is really good.

Dave

Yep, the Phillies did it. I think the star is the second baseman, but heck the whole team is a star. Each found a way to contribute. The area went crazy last night, and I opted to stay in. Though I did chime a cow bell out the office window for awhile. Despite the cold I left the window open just listening to all the gleeful noise. We even had police helicopters flying over our neighborhood. I mean the police were out in force and really out in force in Philly. It worked out for them as well because they are fans, and people were pretty well behaved. Folks after this long draught just wanted to have fun. We are no longer the four team city with the largest amount of time without a championship. Not sure who is now, but it is not us. Trust me, last night and now Philadelphia is truelly the City of Brotherly Love. Everyone has become a sports fan and everyone is happy.

Fox network was not on our side. Most national sports news people were not. The Rays was the Cinderalla story of going from last to first. They beat back the storied teams like the White Sox and Red Sox in the playoffs. The Yankees and Red Sox in thier division. They were the sports story to tell, and who cares about the losers from Philadelphia. They are just barely, after all these years, on the sports radar. They can't win anything.

I love it when the expert talking heads are wrong.

Yes, we are rag tag. Other then the ballfield players have little in common with each other. All kinds of ages from the 20's to the 40's. Lots of different countries involved also. A lifer baseball coach who only became a head coach a few years ago. Just a lot of what seemed like nothing, and a payroll to reflect it. Small chance any of them exchange Christmas Cards.

But give the scouting department, front office, the coach, and players some credit. They found some glue that stuck, and stuck, and worked. Maybe they are not the best team out there but they won the big one. You have no idea how happy so many fans are right now. That includes me, and I thank you for the congrats. It seems in life some people just don't get sports. But on the night the Phillies won the World Series, everybody in the Philly area got it.

Mike
