February, 2002, Simi Valley,
CA
Alex "The Bronx Bomber" Ramos,
Founder and President of the Retired Boxers Foundation
announced a new partnership with innovative online autograph
company, AutographedToYou.com, which will provide participating
boxers with a residual income on autographs sold online,
as well as match the amount as a donation to the Retired
Boxers Foundation. The site is expected to launch in
early April 2002. "What's innovative," said
Ramos, "is that fighters are going to get paid
for their autographs. Usually, fighters sign autographs
for their fans and even at autograph shows for nothing
or maybe just a small appearance fee. They have no idea
how much those autographs are being sold for."
Even publicity savvy pro boxers like Sugar Ray Leonard,
are astounded at the prices offered on their John Henry!
Sugar Ray Leonard's autograph sells for $229.00. Many
fighters think this is another incidence of exploitation
that boxing is famous for. Boxing is one of the few
sports where athletes are not paid residuals for the
use of their name-in this case, their autograph.
The Retired Boxers Foundation has a mission
of helping fighters make the transition from their glorious
days in the ring to a dignified retirement. Boxing is
the only professional sport that does not provide an
adequate retirement plan for their athletes-in fact,
95% end their careers with little or no money and limited
skills to start a new career. It is not because these
athletes are irresponsible or ignorant. It is because
they trusted managers, promoters and others to take
care of business for them and it did not always benefit
the fighter. According to RBF Founder and President,
Alex Ramos, "Today's fighters are aware of the
poor reputation of the boxing business and they have
their own lawyers and accountants. In the 80's, when
I fought, we were just thrilled to get out of the ghetto
and make some money. We never gave a thought to managing
our business because we had a management team we thought
was doing it for us." Ramos frequently reminds
people that the fighters usually come from the ghettos
and the barrios, and not from the universities and affluent
suburbs.
The Retired Boxers Foundation is a 501(c)3
nonprofit corporation founded by Ramos in 1995 and incorporated
in 1998. "Because this foundation is in a sport
not known for its scruples (integrity), we have to work
twice as hard to raise money. We start each day "walking
the talk" and have managed to serve over 100 fighters
in 2001 with less than $25,000.00. Neither Alex or myself
take any salary at all because of our commitment to
the fighters," said Jacquie Richardson, Executive
Director of the RBF.
Pat Daninos, Vice President of Celebrity
Relations, who is a huge boxing fan, approached the
Retired Boxers Foundation. Daninos contacted Alex Ramos
on a recommendation from RBF friend, Col. Bob Sheridan,
well-known boxing commentator and author. Col. Bob Sheridan
is no stranger to boxing having worked for Don King
for over 25 years, and worked as a commentator for Showtime
and other networks. Ramos and Richardson visited the
AutorgraphedToYou.com test website and found several
hundred professional athletes signed up and only one
or two boxers. After carefully researching and reviewing
AutographedToYou.com, the RBF found them to be not only
highly innovative, but worthy of the Retired Boxers
Foundation "seal of approval." The RBF has
approved their company and have given them license to
sell personalized autographs on the Internet, with the
Retired Boxers Foundation as a recipient of the charitable
donation created by every signature the boxers complete
for their fans through AutographedToYou.com. Based on
the findings of the Retired Boxers Foundation Staff,
they found AutographedToYou.com to be a safe and secure
means of interaction between the athlete and their fans
both locally and globally. Best of all, they provide
a way for the athletes to generate revenue for themselves,
create positive public relations with their fans and
the public, and the opportunity to support a charity
like the Retired Boxers Foundation. In addition, the
athlete remains in control of their autograph, unlike
the tradition of signing for unknown entities who then
turn around and make a profit off the fighter and the
fighter getting absolutely nothing. The boxers get to
sign the autographs at home and they are paid up front
every month for the autographs sold.
AutographedToYou.com insures the authenticity
of all autographs sold on their website. In addition
to getting the autographs directly from the athlete,
AutographedToYou.com employs the best authenticators
in the world to assure the fans that their favorite
celebrity or athlete has signed the photo. According
to the RBF, "If these authenticators are good enough
for the baseball players associations, they are the
best. Everyone knows that the baseball players have
been victimized by unscrupulous memorabilia pirates
and they now hire first class authenticators to make
sure that their fans get what they buy: Authentic athlete
autographs!"
The Retired Boxers Foundation released
a statement to all boxers in early January 2002: "As
you might expect, fundraising for a small nonprofit
organization is difficult; even more so in the sport
of boxing because of the reputation of exploitation
and dishonesty. We are thrilled to be working with AutographedToYou.com
and we know that this is an innovative way to fund "Fighters
Helping Fighters", but also to help YOU make the
money that you deserve for the sale of your autographs.
Through AutographedToYou.com, we can now offer you a
worldwide market for one of the most valuable products
you own: Your Good Name."

The Retired Boxers Foundation, a 501(c)3
nonprofit corporation started by 1984 USBA Middleweight
Champion, Alex "The Bronx Bomber" Ramos in
1995 to help fighters in need, is leading a campaign
called "Fighters Helping Fighters" to inspire
other fighters to help. Ramos started the Retired Boxers
Foundation because of what happens to professional boxers
once their careers are over. Because boxing is the only
sport that does not provide adequate pensions to fighters
once they retire, too many of them suffer in the transition
from their glorious days in the ring to a dignified
retirement. This partnership with AutographedToYou.com
is unique way to help the fighters earn extra income
and a great way to raise money for the Retired Boxers
Foundation so that we can help fighters in need.

The Fighters Helping Fighters campaign has assisted
over 100 retired professional boxers and their families,
including arranging surgery, tax consultation to clear
up problems with the IRS, legal services, rehabilitation
services, Dignity Bags for homeless fighters and fighters
in convalescent homes as well as financial assistance
for the families.
