The unassisted triple play is one of the
rarest plays in baseball. So marvelous is this play
that it has only been done twelve times in the history
of Major League Baseball. And one of our own Mickey
Morandini turned one. As I was thumbing through the
baseball almanac I came across a quote from Bill Wambsganss
the second man to ever turn this play. Yes it was quite
a few years ago 1920 to be precise. Well anyway, He
said, "Funny thing, I played in the big leagues for
thirteen years and the only thing anybody seems to remember
is that once I made an unassisted triple play in the
world series." BOOM! It hit me. That is why I remember
Mickey Morandini.
I will always remember that play, when
Mickey turned ONE OF THE RAREST & MOST FABULOUS FEATS
IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, the unassisted triple play,
not in a world series, but in a game that the Phils
lost to the Pirates 3-2...Seven shortstops, three 2nd
baseman, and two 1st baseman, are the only players to
ever turn the unassisted triple play. I'll end this
with a Quote from the eleventh man to ever turn an unassisted
triple play, Randy Velarde ss-2003- A's, "I had it played
perfectly. Both guys took off, it was a soft liner,
I caught it. Tag, tag, thats it."
