Rudy was the first movie shot on
the Notre Dame campus since Knute Rockne, All-American
in 1940. Rudy finished filming in the spring
of 1993, and premiered in South Bend in the fall of
'93 before being distributed nationally. Rudy
tells the story of Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, who came
to Notre Dame as a transfer in the mid-1970s. Ruettiger
had dreamed of graduating from Notre Dame and playing
football. Ruettiger earned only one varsity letter,
but thanks to Rudy is one of the school's most
famous alumni.
Throughout his time at Notre Dame,
the spirit and determination of small Ruettiger earned
him the respect of his coaches and teammates. In the
last home game of his senior year, Ruettiger fulfilled
his dream by playing 27 seconds against Georgia Tech.
When the final gun sounded, his teammates made him the
only player ever carried off the field at Notre Dame
Stadium.
To recreate the famous scene for the movie, during a
break in the 1992 Boston College game 60,000 fans stood
and cheered as actor Sean Astin was carried off the
field.
