In 1965 Dick "Night Train" Lane
retired from the Detroit Lions. The Lions needed a replacement
and in 1967 Lem Barney filled that position.
Barney was born September 8th., 1945 in
Gulfport, Miss. He turned heads while playing for Jacksonville
State. From 1967 to 1977 he played for the Lions, the
only pro team he ever played for.
He set numerous records in interceptions,
return yardage and punt returns. All of which led him
in 1970 to become the NFL's highest paid cornerback
in history. His contract was worth $42,000.
Along the line he played in seven Pro
Bowls, and was named All Pro three times. In 1992 he
became the fifth cornerback to enter the NFL Hall Of
Fame.
Today he is a Public Relations Counselor
for the Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. located in the
Detroit Area.
