Born May 1, 1960 in Covington, KY
In 1976 Steve Cauthen made racing headlines
at age 16 by winning 240 races, a record for an apprentice
jockey. The next year, his 487 winning rides and $6
million in purse earnings set new records and landed
him on the cover of Sports Illustrated twice, plus led
to three Eclipse Awards.
In 1978, at age 18, Cauthen became the
youngest jockey to win racing's Triple Crown, riding
Affirmed to three exciting wins over Alydar in one the
sport's greatest rivalries. In 1979, Cauthen moved to
Europe, where he was three times the leading rider in
England ('84, '85, & '87).
Cauthen is the only rider to win five
major Derbys: the Kentucky Derby on Affirmed ('78);
England's Epsom Derby with Slip Anchor ('85) and Reference
Point ('87); the French Derby on Old Vic ('89); the
Irish Derby on Old Vic ('89); and the Italian Derby
on Hailsham ('91).
On August 8, 1994, Steve Cauthen became
the youngest person ever inducted into horse racing's
Hall of Fame at the National Museum of Racing in Saratoga
Springs, New York.
Today he is retired from being a jockey.
He currently is Vice President Public Relations for
the Turfway Park in Kentucky. He resides on a horse
farm in Northern Kentucky where he breeds and raises
